Inside the Grade R Adventure Sampler
A 10-page A4 printable adventure for a parent or caregiver and child to explore together. It begins with a grown-ups’ guide and ends with space to reflect on what you discovered about your child.
Free 10-page printable PDF. Save the file, start with the grown-ups’ guide and choose one activity to enjoy together. You can also try the colour activity below without printing.
Stories, sounds & movement
Tell a story from pictures, go on a sound hunt, and explore lines and shapes through movement and drawing.
Numbers, patterns & shapes
Count familiar objects, continue and create patterns, and spot shapes in the world around you.
Feelings & connection
Act out everyday situations, talk about choices and feelings, and notice how your child likes to learn.
For grown-ups: start with the guide, choose one activity, and keep it light. Look, listen and ask gentle questions. There is no need to finish everything at once, and this sampler is not a test.
Getting ready to print?
Our help page explains how to save a PDF, choose A4 paper, check the scale and print a test page.
Try now: become colour detectives
Practise noticing details, describing what you see and comparing ideas. Choose a familiar room or a safe outdoor spot and stay together.
You need: just your eyes and a little curiosity. Paper and crayons are optional.
1. Choose a colour
Let your child pick a colour. Look around together for three things that match it. It is fine to find fewer and choose another colour.
2. Look a little closer
Compare two of your finds. Are they exactly the same colour? What else is similar or different?
3. Share a discovery
Invite your child to describe a favourite find, point out a detail or draw it. Ask: “What surprised you?”
Make it work for your child
Keep it simple: name one colour and look for one match together.
Add a little challenge: compare shades, count your finds or explain how you grouped them.
Finish well: notice the effort your child made and stop while the experience still feels positive.
A note for grown-ups
Looking and pointing are enough; there is no need to collect anything. Leave unfamiliar plants, insects and objects where they are.
Take turns making discoveries. If your child sees something differently, ask them to tell you more.
